A UFC bantamweight title matchup between two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes and The Ultimate Fighter 18 victor, Julianna Pena has been set for UFC 265 on August 7th. — with a location or venue for the showcase yet to be determined by the promotion.
Making her return to the 135-pound division for the first time since UFC 245 back in December of 2019, Nunes secured a second career triumph over Germaine de Randamie, handing the inaugural UFC featherweight champion a unanimous decision loss.
Sitting at #6 in the official bantamweight pile, Pena, who has been vigorously campaigning for a shot at Nunes’ throne rebounded to the winner’s enclosure on ‘Fight Island’ back in January at UFC 257 — stopping former title chaser, Sara McMann with a third-round rear-naked choke. UFC president, Dana White confirmed the pairing of Nunes and Pena to ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto.
Most recently featuring at the featherweight weight-class, Nunes scored the second successful defence of her championship via a brutal opening frame triangle-armbar stoppage over now UFC alum, Megan Anderson in the co-main event of a championship tripleheader.
Recognized as the consensus greatest female mixed martial artist in the history of the sport, the Bahia native has scored victories over the likes of Julia Budd, common-foe, McMann, Valentina Shevchenko (x2), Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, Cris Cyborg, Raquel Pennington, and Felicia Spencer to name a few during her gold-laden career.
For Washington grappler, Pena, the challenger enters the championship matchup off the back of her win over McMann, having dropped a surprising guillotine defeat to the above-noted, de Randamie.
Scoring other career wins over inaugural UFC flyweight champion, Nicco Montano, and former title Jessica Eye, Pena also holds a unanimous decision win over Cat Zingano — who is the last opponent to best reigning champion, Nunes.
