The premier combat sports organization for women has announced it’s next card for Thursday, Sept. 17.

Invicta Fighting Championships 42 will crown a new atomweight champion when Invicta stalwart Ashley ‘Smashley’ Cummins (7-5) takes on top-notch wrestler Alesha ‘Half-Pint’ Zappitella (7-2) for the vacant 105-pounds title.

Cummins debuted at the promotion’s inaugural event in April of 2012. Since then, she’s made nine appearances in the Invicta cage, taking on current UFC fighters Joanne Calderwood, Alexa Grasso and most recently, former Invicta atomweight champion Jinh Yu Frey.

Cummins came up short against Frey, but will get a second opportunity to claim gold. Zappitella has very much carved out a path for herself despite being relatively young in the sport. She’s won 80 percent of her Invicta bouts, including consecutive victories over Lindsey VanZandt and Kelly D’Angelo to secure this title bid.

The co-main event goes down in the bantamweight division with former title challengers Lisa ‘Battle Angel’ Verzosa (5-1) and Raquel Canuto (6-6) — née Pa’aluhi — competing. Verzosa last competed at Phoenix Rising 3 in March with a Fight of the Year battle against Julija Stoliarenko.

The split verdict was the first loss for Verzosa as a pro. Canuto returns to the sport for the first time since Invicta FC 25 in 2017. The Hawaii native has garnered her black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She is ready to step back into the cage where she’s tested skills against the likes of Women’s MMA GOAT Amanda Nunes, Sara McMann, Pannie Kianzad, and Yana Kunitskaya.

Also on the card, Brazilian vet Jéssica Delboni (9-2) faces former atomweight titlist Herica Tiburcio (11-4) at strawweight, flyweight Victoria ‘Fury’ Leonardo (6-2) locks horns with Liz ‘The Titan’ Tracy (5-3), bantamweight Auttumn Norton (1-1) welcomes Brittney Cloudy (2-2) back IFC, and newcomer Jennifer “Dugwen” Chieng (1-0) meets Flore “Aito Hine” Hani (2-1) at 125 lbs.

Invicta FC 42 is overseen by the Kansas Athletic Commission and will again feature open scoring. The event airs live and exclusively on UFC Fight Pass at 7 p.m. CT. With the ongoing pandemic and COVID 19 considerations, Invicta FC 42 takes place in Kansas City behind closed doors — omitting fans and media.

Just like with any Invicta FC event, the safety of its fighters, their corners, its staff and commission officials is of the utmost importance All participants will be tested for coronavirus prior to the card.
