The 12th Annual Fighters Only World Mixed Martial Arts Awards show originally set for July 8th, 2020 had been postponed and rescheduled to take place in October on a date and location yet to be announced, according to a press release from Fighters Only Magazine. The world’s first monthly mixed martial arts magazine launched in the UK, back in 2005.
The World Mixed Martial Arts Awards are equal to the Oscars for the MMA community. The Show takes place during International Fight Week in Las Vegas. Hosted by the UFC, coinciding with one of their biggest PPV events of the year, it’s a star-studded gala.
Fighters Only CEO Rob Hewitt issued the announcement saying:
“I am making some fundamental changes that will not only evolve our show in a positive manner from this day forward, but also provide us the best chance of accomplishing our goal of celebrating MMA as the greatest sport in the world with the very people who make it so special.”
Hewitt also announced they are extending the 12-month nomination period to 18 months. This years award ceremony will cover the time frame from January 1st, 2019 to June 30th, 2020. Perhaps some of the nominees have yet to shine with just over a month left to earn a nod. Nominees for the 2020 awards will be announced on Wednesday, July 1st, 2020. Fan voting will take place at www.worldmmaawards.com running through Tuesday, August 18th, 2020.
The Fighters Only awards show production value is on par with the ESPY’s, Emmy’s, and the Grammy’s, attracting top-notch talent from the world of sports and entertainment.
Considering the fact, the UFC was approved this week to hold events in Las Vegas, starting this Saturday night, the 30th of May, at the APEX sans crowd, it seems like the right thing to do by pushing back the event. This will give Fighters Only the extra time to show appreciation for those folks on the frontlines battling COVID-19.
