A flyweight matchup between one-time title challengers, Jennifer Maia and Jessica Eye is set to land at UFC 264 on July 10th. — with a location or venue for the event yet to be determined by the organization.
Maia, the most recent title challenger to current champion, Valentina Shevchenko’s throne, dropped a unanimous decision loss to the Kyrgyzstan native at UFC 255 in November, despite a promising showing in the early rounds.
Attempting to snap a two-fight skid against the Brazilian, Eye most recently featured at UFC 257 in January on ‘Fight Island’, suffering a unanimous judging loss to Scottish striker, Joanne Calderwood over three rounds. News of the matchup between Maia and Eye was first reported by MMA Fighting reporters, Guilherme Cruz and Damon Martin.
Curitiba native, Maia is a former Invicta FC flyweight champion, and prior to her November loss to Shevchenko, stopped common-foe, Calderwood at UFC Vegas 5 in August with an opening round armbar late in the frame to earn her shot at the title.
A six-fight promotional veteran, the 32-year-old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai black belt holds an even 3-3 record under the organization’s scrutiny, which features wins over the above-mentioned, Calderwood, former bantamweight title chaser, Alexis Davis, and a second career triumph over veteran fan-favourite, Roxanne Modafferi.
Eye, 34, earned her clash at the aforenoted, Shevchenko at UFC 238 in June of 2019 — dropping a devastating second round high-kick knockout, which snapped a three-fight undefeated streak.
Set to make her fifteenth UFC appearance, the Xtreme Couture trainee holds a 5-8(1) promotional resume, which features victories over Maia’s compatriot, the now surging, Viviane Araujo, Kalindra Faria, Jessica-Rose Clark, and fellow one-time title chaser, Katlyn Chookagian. Prior to her January loss to Calderwood, Eye suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Cynthia Calvillo in the main event of UFC Vegas 2 in June.
