Perennial welterweight contender, Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards has been forced to withdraw from his high-stakes meeting with former division champion, Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley, as the novel coronavirus pandemic continues to rip through UFC events.

The Birmingham based striker was scheduled to headline UFC Fight Night London on March 21st. from the O2 Arena, but after the promotion elected to relocate the event as a precautionary measure – Edwards will remain in the U.K. due to the ongoing travel ban. Edwards, who’s managed eight straight wins in his last eight Octagon walks took to his official Instagram account where he announced his decision to withdraw from the event with a statement.

Last night I went to sleep with some hope that UFC London would continue next week. I woke up this morning to the news that it won’t be. We have been working with the UFC on possible solutions to keep the fight alive, but unfortunately with such a short window of time, nothing was viable. Myself and my team are all fathers, husbands, sons, and brothers, and none of us can leave our families right now. I wish I could have found a way for the fans, I truy do. I have been dreaming of headlining a UFC show in my home country since I started this sport.

This cancellation has been truly heartbreaking. I have never worked harder and never been more prepared for the biggest moment in my career. But I know that the whole world is hurting right now and this is bigger than me, this is bigger than sports. All I can hope for is that all of you stay safe and look after each other as we get past this and move forward. I am humbled by the thousands of messages of support I receive in the hours since the announcement, I truly appreciate you all and feel a lot of love right now. I look forward to this event being rebooked when it is safe to do so, so Tyron (Woodley) and I can put on the show that you all deserve. Please take care, we will all get through is (sic). Rocky.”

As of yet, it’s unaware who will possibly replace Leon Edwards against Tyron Woodley, with surging welterweight contender, and winner on Saturday night, Gilbert Burns, throwing his name into the hat already. It’s also unknown as of yet, if the promotion has secured a different venue or location to host the event, who has lost an incredible eleven fights as of this evening.
