President Donald Trump provided the opening remarks for tonight’s ESPN+ PPV broadcast of UFC 249. As the world emerges from the COVID-19 quarantine, the UFC is leading the way. Under strict protocols and guidelines from the state of Florida, the UFC became the first major sports promotion to come back online. It may be a while before live crowds get to witness the best in mixed martial arts throw down, although I see the light at the end of the tunnel. President Trump’s previously recorded comments preceded the PPV event originally scheduled for April 18th. – scrapped as the United States quarantined to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.
“Get the sports leagues back,” Trump said. “Let’s play. You do the social distancing, and whatever else you have to do, but we need sports, we want our sports back, and congratulations to Dana White, and the UFC.”
I must agree with our President. Staying at home is much easier for many folks if sports are available as a welcome distraction and a source of inspiration. As each day passes, we see more studies showing that exercise and fresh air (vitamin D) can help strengthen our immune system in the fight against COVID-19.
Love him or hate him, our President has tried to provide hope throughout this crisis. Sports and physical activity provide hope and mental stability to so many people across the globe. Returning to a sense of normalcy is something we are all looking forward to, we can thank the UFC and the state of Florida for being the tip of the spear in that quest.
