The potential light heavyweight title eliminator, between one-time title challengers, Thiago ‘Marreta’ Santos, and Glover Teixeira has been moved to an October 3rd. event on ‘Fight Island’ following the return of a positive COVID-19 result from the latter.
Originally scheduled to headline a UFC Fight Night Vegas card on September 12th. – the high-stakes pairing has now been reworked for a UFC Fight Night card on October 3rd. – featuring beneath a bantamweight matchup between Holly Holm, and Irene Aldana.
A positive novel coronavirus test for Teixeira will force the postponing of his second Octagon appearance of this year – following his statement knockout of former title chaser, Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smith at UFC Fight Night Jacksonville in May.
For Santos, the Muay Thai ace hasn’t featured in the Octagon since July last year where he dropped his premier promotional title tilt in a razor-thin decision loss to Jon Jones. Suffering a slew of major knee injuries early in the bout, Santos will look to snap his prolonged period on the sidelines. News of Teixeira’s positive test and subsequent relocation of the matchup was initially reported by Combate’s, Raphael Marinho.
Adding Smith to his eye-catching four-fight winning run, Minas Gerais veteran, Teixeira has notched other notable recent wins over the likes of Nikita Krylov, Ion Cuţelaba, and Karl Roberson. Hoping to finally reach the Octagon summit, the 40-year-old made his first siege to light heavyweight gold back in April 2014 – dropping a unanimous decision to common opponent, Jones after a twenty-fight unbeaten run.
Earning his crack at Jones’ light heavyweight throne – explosive striker, Santos made good on his move a division higher from middleweight, scoring wins over Eryk Anders, former perennial contender, Jimi Manuwa, and Jan Błachowicz.
With Santos and Teixeira now poised to throw down on October 3rd. instead, their interesting matchup comes one week after we determine a new undisputed light heavyweight champion. Following Jones’ decision to vacate his title ahead of a much-anticipated move to heavyweight, Dominick Reyes and the aforenoted, Błachowicz will meet in the co-main event of UFC 253 to determine the next kingpin at 205-pounds.
