On October 28, 2017, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Vicente Luque and Niko Price met in a welterweight bout on the late prelim portion of a fight night event that would be headlined by the return of Lyoto Machida from a USADA suspension. Even though it may feel like a lifetime has passed by since that first meeting that night in the fall of 2017, both Luque and Price have continued on to do what they have always been known to do.
That being, they bring the fight to their opponents each and every time out inside the cage. Luque defeated price by D’arce choke on that night, and while Luque has soared to heights as high as a main card slotting opposite Stephen Thompson last November, Price has had no issue stringing together an impressive reel of highlights himself.
Now, in the year of 2020, the two welterweight madmen would be scheduled to meet again. Luque eager to nab that illustrious 2-0 record against any given opponent, Price aiming to settle the score at one win a piece.
As expected, each man brought the fight to the other. Both men landing cleanly in succession throughout, each having their moments of success as well as their moments of danger.
Price’s biggest opportunity coming at the end of round one, Luque with a big opportunity in round two. If there was an All-durability team in the UFC, both of these guys clearly would have clear and concise arguments to be included. Luque through the first ten minutes though, was a lot more active with his kicks. He diversified his approach by mixing in his punches with kicks to the legs, body, and head in a beautiful fashion.
This approach appeared to be what may have given the edge to Luque on the cards should this razor-thin fight have gone to decision, however hovering around the 90-second mark of the third round Luque dropped Price with a left hand, not much longer thereafter the doctor was called in to look at the eye of Price. Effectively, with his right eye completely closed, Price was deemed unable to continue and Luque was effectively the winner of his seventh fight of his last eight.
Official Result: Vicente Luque def. Niko Price by TKO (Doctor Stoppage – Eye) at 3:37 – Round 3
