Off the back of his first round doctor’s stoppage loss to three-fight rival, Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 on Saturday — former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor has deleted numerous tweets aimed at the former interim lightweight titleholder, as well as the Lafayette native’s family.
McGregor returned to the Octagon for the first time since a January knockout loss to Poirier on ‘Fight Island’, and at the close of the opening round against the Louisianan last weekend, suffered fractures to his left tibia and fibula — resulting in an eventual doctor’s stoppage at the close of the first round.
Suffered a two-fight skid for the first time in his professional career, a seething McGregor claimed that his rivalry with Poirier was not over despite losing the trilogy rubber match against the American Top Team staple, and threatened the #1 ranked lightweight and his wife, Jolie Poirier from the Octagon canvas as he received treatment for his leg injury.
On Monday, McGregor posted an update on his official Instagram, detailing how he had undergone a successful three-hour surgical procedure, and how he would on a crutch for a period of six weeks, before claiming that Poirier’s victory on Saturday night was “illegitimate“.
Late last night, McGregor took to his official Twitter account, posting various statements and targeted tweets toward Dustin and Jolie Poirier, as well as posting a picture of opponent, Poirier and his daughter, Parker. After a short period, the tweets were deleted.
In screenshots obtained via MMA Junkie — McGregor posted a screengrab from UFC lightweight contender, Mateusz Gamrot’s Instagram account, who is pictured with American Top Team teammate, Poirier, as the Lafayette native holds his left leg.
Accompanied in the same tweet is a picture of Poirier who had returned home following his victory on Saturday, as he sits with his daughter, Parker. In a third photo, a closer cropped picture of Poirier was posted. In a series of worded tweets, McGregor posted; “I’m a nasty dude I promise you.“, “I’m dangerous man.“, “Your wife is your husband.“, and “Gonzo“.
The Crumlin native also targeted Poirier’s wife, Jolie in a deleted tweet, once more alluding to an alleged attempt from her to send him a direct message on Instagram.
“Hey you guys!” McGregor tweeted. “I don’t want to associate any negativity with my foundation so I’d like to take this chance to apologize for Dustin’s (Poirier) wife (Jolie Poirier) trying to message me privately on Instagram.“
Following Poirier’s first round doctor’s stoppage victory on Saturday, he explained post-fight how McGregor was still making threats to him and alleged that the Dubliner was making gun signs toward him and pointing a gun at his own head.
Footage emerged yesterday of McGregor allegedly making those gestures during Poirier’s post-fight interview with UFC colour commentator, Joe Rogan — before making threats toward Dustin and Jolie Poirier.
“In your sleep, you’re getting it, in your sleep you’re getting it,” McGregor says while motioning a gun sign toward his own head. “In your sleep you’re dead, you and your Mrs. It ain’t over, trust me. Be careful what you say, mate.“
Former interim lightweight champion, Poirier is now expected to challenge undisputed lightweight gold holder, Charles Oliveira for the championship in his next bout, however, voiced his willingness to meet with McGregor again in the Octagon — explaining how the closure that usually comes with a trilogy rubber match wasn’t there following UFC 264. And by all accounts, UFC president, Dana White and McGregor are interested in a fourth bout in the future.
