One-time UFC middleweight title challenger, Paulo ‘Borrachinha’ Costa will remain on this weekend’s UFC Vegas 41 card, as he scores a short-notice 195lbs catchweight headliner with fellow former title chaser, Marvin ‘The Italian Dream’ Vettori.

The main event bout was cast into doubt last night when Kings MMA staple, Vettori claimed Costa was on track to miss the middleweight limit at Friday’s official weigh-ins by a sizeable margin.

The Trento native maintained that the situation regarding the pairing was bout was still unclear — but stressed that Costa was attempting to force through a catchweight contest for this weekend’s UFC Apex facility headliner. And admitted that he would be open to accepting a reasonable special catchweight bout.

There’s some sh*t going on, well, I’ll say it — he’s (Paulo Costa) he has some problems with weight, I guess,” Vettori claimed. “We’ll see — I said I’d fight him at any weight, but at the end of the day, we still have to all be professional, and I mean, he’s not professional. But, f*ck — we all go through weight-cuts, he has to do some of it, you know.

Like I said, the last thing I want is for the fight to be scratched, so I’ll fight him at any weight,” Vettori continued. “With that being said, he needs to suffer a little bit to make weight, because all of us go through that. Buy yeah, man, I mean — that shows, that shows. He’s a lot overweight, and we gotta find a way. I’m not hard to please in that sense, I’ll say, ‘Whatever, it has to make sense’.

Appearing for his media availability soon thereafter, Costa, who appeared quite coy, admitted that he would not be cutting to the 186lbs sanctioned middleweight limit, confirming upon request that he weighed in the region of 211lbs during his interview rounds.

The Belo Horizonte native offered a series of catchweight matchups to Vettori, explaining how he would be willing to cut to 195lbs for the five round headlining bout, but elected against elaborating on the reasoning regarding his decision to seek a catchweight bout.

As per an initial report from Yahoo! Sports reporter, Kevin Iole tonight, the promotion has confirmed that the pairing between Costa and Vettori will now proceed at a special 195lbs catchweight, with Costa forfeiting 20% of his fight purse to Vettori as a result.

This weekend’s outing will mark Costa’s first since his premier professional falter at the leg and hands of current middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya back at UFC 253 in September of last annum on ‘Fight Island’.

For Vettori, the Italian saw his impressive five-fight undefeated run also halted by common-foe, two-time opponent, Adesanya as recent as June where he suffered a rather one-sided unanimous decision loss in the main event of UFC 263 in Glendale, Arizona.
