Update: Dustin Poirier Has Yet To Receive Offer To Rematch Conor McGregor

Former interim UFC lightweight titleholder, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier has revealed he’s yet to receive an offer to rematch former two-weight world champion, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor – with rumblings pointing to a re-run between the two under the promotion’s banner.

Both McGregor and Poirier agreed to rematch in a charity sparring match on December 12th. in Dublin, Ireland – although it remains to be seen if that particular event, which would be an exhibition, could come to fruition at all – with the pair still contractually obliged to the UFC. McGregor, who has also voiced his interest in boxing decorated world champion, Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao in his next foray into combat sports, also remained firm that the UFC would have no part in promoting the proposed charity event.

UFC president, Dana White commented on the floated charity matchup between Poirier and McGregor in December – detailing how the promotion was currently waiting to hear back from the pair after they had offered both a bout agreement to re-run their UFC 178 tie, in the Octagon.

(Conor) called out (Dustin) Poirier for a fight with (him) in Dublin for charity,” White said. “So we offered them both a fight. We offered Dustin and Conor a fight, so we’re waiting to hear back from both of them.

Despite tweeting, “I Accept” in relation to White’s recent comments, Poirier explained to ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto via text – that he’s in fact yet to receive an official bout agreement to rematch McGregor, in a proposed January 23rd. 2021 affair. 

McGregor and Poirier initially met at UFC 178 in September of 2014 during both men’s respective tilts at featherweight. Scoring a first-round knockout, McGregor continued his rise to the division’s throne in a heated matching, with Poirier subsequently testing lightweight waters, finding massive success.

Returning to the Octagon after an extended hiatus, the Dubliner featured at UFC 246 in January – taking a stunning forty-second knockout win over veteran striker, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in a welterweight headliner. Announcing plans to compete three times this year, McGregor has been limited to just one appearance so far, with the promotion forced to hold events behind a closed gate.

For Lafayette favourite, Poirier – the 32-year-old returned to winning ways at UFC Fight Night Vegas 4 in June, scoring a unanimous decision win over then-surging contender, Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker in an exciting back-and-forth main event clash.
